Direct Injuries
Direct injuries are injuries which occur at the site of impact. Common examples are fractures, corks and lost teeth. Watch the clip below for an example.
Watch the Youtube clip below and distinguish direct from indirect injuries. |
Indirect Injuries
Indirect injuries occur away from the point of impact. They occur when the forces placed upon the body are not absorbed or displaced correctly. Common examples are dislocations and torn muscles, ligaments and tendons. |
Overuse injuries
Overuse injuries are caused by repeated movement in SPECFIC regions of the body. Commonly it is associated with a change in training, either environmentally or in volume / intensity.
Common overuse factors are:
Poor preparation, Overtraining/fatigue, Poor environment (running on hard surfaces for example), Poor equipment (inferior shoes, too heavy a racquet) ,Biomechanics (contraindicated movement), Previous injury,Nature of the game, Demands on young bodies
Common Overuse Injuries
Osteitis pubis Achilles tendinopathy Patella tendinosis (jumpers knee) ‘shin splints’ Rotator cuff Stress fractures‘(lower back in cricketers / feet in long distance runners) Tennis / Golfers Elbow

Soft Tissue Injury
Exam style questionEvaluate the use of heat and cold in the treatment of a soft-tissue injury.
|
Soft tissue injuries include damage to muscle, tendons, ligaments, cartilage, skin, blood vessels, organs and nerves. There are many types of soft tissue injury. They may be acute (occurring suddenly, such as a sprain) or chronic (prolonged). Acute soft tissue injuries include sprains, strains, dislocation, subluxation, torn cartilage, contusions and abrasions. Prolonged soft tissue injuries may include many of the same types of injury, but their severity necessitates a long rehabilitation. They may also be overuse injuries such as shin splints. Two of the most common soft tissue injuries are tears and contusions.
