Australia was officially settled in 1788, and along with the establishment of basic societies, sport was also introduced. The emergence of sport largely reflected the culture of the British migrants and popular sports were horse racing, boxing and cock fighting. As a result of these sports, gambling was introduced as people would bet on the outcomes of various activities. In the beginning, society in Australia had to concentrate on survival as the environment was so harsh and sport as we know it today was still in its infancy
